Two common and ineffective paths
Youth groups have been stuck for decades now in two primary methods for engaging and tending the spiritual development of teens. You have likely used an educational approach through small groups and weekly youth meetings, or event-styled gatherings with music, games, junk-food and a short devotional message. Most churches are struggling to find solutions to help teenagers who are making life choices based on cultural values that are opposed to traditional Christianity. Young people are also confronted with non-stop distractions that fight against the deeper contemplation of faith, spirituality and discipleship. Education-based methods that rely on Bible study are not meaningfully engaging students and event methods, while producing more engagement, only succeed at capturing surface interests. These methods are simply not effective at getting teenagers attention and guiding them into deeper levels of critical thinking, self-awareness and decision making.
As we designed Elevate Youth Solutions our research team found themselves looking at their own past or present experience in religious organizations and realized that the same factors that make this program effective in educational settings could have a transformative impact on the way that churches carry out their spiritual mission in the lives of young people. In fact, our pilot groups for the testing and development of Elevate coaching concepts were carried out among High School aged students in a church setting.
A method that has two potent effects
Youth leaders are reporting significant growth in the students who are participating in EYS groups and an equal benefit they are expressing back to us is the way that our mentor-coaching method was giving new and effective tools for church staff and volunteers. When you stop telling, teaching and advising, you can actually start listening and guiding teenagers to the open space where they can better see where they are, determine who they want to be, and ultimately make positive decisions that they own for themselves.
